Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Lakers girls’ basketball team earned their 16th win on Thursday night by convincingly defeating the Crosby-Ironton Rangers 77-53 at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse. The Lakers used stifling defense and a well-balanced offense to win their seventh game in a row.
Detroit Lakes jumped out to a 15-0 lead and held Crosby-Ironton off the scoreboard until the Rangers finally scored a point. They converted a three-pointer with 10:38 remaining in the first half. Detroit Lakes was led in the first half by Karlee Mace, who had eight points at halftime. The Lakers had seven players record points in the first half. C-I’s Tori Oehrlein finished the first half with 12 points. Oehrlein entered the game leading all players in Minnesota, averaging 30 points per game, but she was held in check by the zone defense of the Lakers. The Lakers led at halftime 37-17.
The Lakers continued to pull away in the second half, building on their lead and led by 32 points at one point. Detroit Lakes had five different players in double figures in the scoring department.
Laker coach Rachel Johson said it was the most complete win she has seen this year from her girls. “It was fun to watch the girls make small tweaks here and there and put together such a strong team effort for the win,” Johnson said postgame. “Shots were falling, and we were confident going to the rim offensively.”
Detroit Lakes never trailed in the game and scored more points against C-I than they had against any other opponent that they have played this year. The Rangers beat Staples-Motley 104-38 last Friday night, but were held to 53 points on Thursday night.
Oehrlein finished the night with 23 points before fouling out of the game with 3:15 remaining.
The loss drops Crosby-Ironton to 11-6 overall, and they are now 3-2 in the conference. The win improves the Lakers record in the conference to 4-1.
The Lakers return to action on Friday night when they play the Fergus Falls Otters. Friday night’s game will be their annual ‘Autograph Night’ for the players and a benefit for ‘Coaches Versus Cancer.’
KDLM will be there for the broadcast with our pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 pm.
