DETROIT LAKES, MN (KDLM) – Giving Hearts Day 2023 is coming up on Thursday, February 9th. Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour fundraising event. Since 2008, Giving Hearts Day has raised more than $138 million dollars for charities across the state.

One of the local non-profits participating in Giving Hearts Day this year is the Humane Society of the Lakes. HS of the Lakes is a no-kill animal shelter in Becker County that provides services to unwanted, stray, and abandoned animals while they await their forever home.

Tessa Fenu is the fundraising coordinator at the shelter and says that Giving Hearts Day is an important day for the shelter.

“We are 100% donation-based,” says Fenu. “We don’t have any funding from the city or the state. So we rely 100% on in-kind donations, monetary donations, volunteers…and we need people to support us. It’s very important that we keep going to save these animals’ lives.”

Fenu adds that without the Humane Society, there would be a lot more stray animals wandering the streets.

“If we weren’t around, our community would be a little more overrun with stray cats and dogs, especially barn cats that overpopulate.”

In addition to monetary donations, HS of the Lakes is always looking for volunteers and donations of goods like dog and cat food, big dog toys, cat litter, and office supplies.

Other charities and non-profits taking part in Giving Hearts Day this year include Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, Detroit Mountain, Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation, Friends of Tamarac, Health Resources, Holy Rosary School, Lakes Crisis & Resource Center, Lend A Hand Up, and Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics.
