DETROIT LAKES, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes City Council has approved the first step towards a 12-year plan that would collect up to $17.3 million in sales taxes for a project to demolish and re-construct the Pavillion by the City Park.
The Pavillion, which was built in 1915, would be replaced with a larger building more suitable for year-round use.
Along with the new pavilion building, there would be new parking, green space in the summer and an ice rink in the winter, a shelter/bath house, a playground, and a splash pad added to the area.
The Pavillion area was first constructed in 1897, rebuilt in 1915, and has received a number of upgrades and remodels…the most recent in 2006.
The tax would replace a similar tax expected to expire this year that was used to pay for the new police station on Summit Avenue.
A referendum for the half-cent sales tax is expected to be on the ballot in either November ’23 or ’24.
