Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Detroit Mountain is getting a new addition to the fun around the kids’ playground area. The Minneapolis-based Leonic Collective in partnership with Project 412 is building a massive interactive wooly mammoth sculpture.

The 8x20x12 foot mammoth’s “fur” will be made up of sticks collected from the woods surrounding DMRA. One of the legs of the mammoth will have a ladder attached so kids can climb up inside the sculpture.

Zach Schumack and Ian Molloy-Busse, who also designed the Cave People by the DL City Park, have been building the Mountain Mammoth along with Leonic Collective artists from Arkansas, Texas, British Columbia, and North Carolina — and one local addition: Detroit Lakes Ice Palace creator Hans Gilsdorf, who was recruited to assist with the project. Gilsdorf’s resume also includes the statue outside the DL Public Library, the Laker Ripple Effect mural at Detroit Lakes High School, and the Angel of Remembrance statue at Essentia Health St. Mary’s.
