ALEXANDRIA, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Laker girls basketball team fell to the Alexandria Cardinals 62-42 on Tuesday night. The Lakers could not pull off the regular season sweep against their Section 8AAA rivals. The Lakers beat the Cardinals at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse in mid-December 56-50.
The Lakers, who were playing without senior forward Jacee Hauser as she recovers from a stress fracture in her foot, could not match up with the size of the Cardinals, and 6’2 sophomore Hadley Thul led all scorers with 17 points. Senior Abby Larson led the Lakers in scoring with 11 points.
The Cardinals and Lakers both played tough defense in the first half and both teams only combined for 50 points. The Cardinals led 30-20 at halftime. The Cardinals took advantage of free-throw opportunities. The Cardinals converted on 13 of 17 free throws in the first half. The Lakers struggled at the line in the first half, shooting 7 of 14 free throws.
The Lakers put together a nice run in the second half and cut the deficit to three points making the score 34-31. Abby Larson led the Lakers in scoring in the second half and finished with a team-high 11 points. The Lakers had two starters foul out of the game in the final five minutes and the Cardinals took advantage for the victory.
Detroit Lakes fell for the first time this season to a section opponent and are now 3-1 in section play. The Cardinals improve to 4-1 in the section and 10-3 overall. The Lakers are now 9-3 overall and will look to bounce back on Thursday when they travel to Staples-Motley for Mid-State Conference matchup.
