Victim ID’d After Wahpeton Shooting Outside Ice Arena; Suspect Still At Large

WAHPETON, ND (KDLM) – A man has died following a shooting outside the Ella Stern & Harry Stern Sports Arena last night while a youth hockey game was taking place inside the arena.

Wahpeton Police were dispatched on a shots-fired call to the area near the Ella Stern & Harry Stern Sports Arena at 7:11 p.m. Monday, January 16th. Responding officers found an injured man, identified as 40-year-old Jeremiah Jeffery Medenwald of Hankinson, N.D,  outside a car across the street from the arena. First responders began life-saving measures but Medenwald was pronounced dead after being transported to St. Francis hospital in Breckenridge, Minn.

Law enforcement says the incident is believed to be “isolated” and that there’s no current danger to the general public.

The North Dakota State College of Science campus community was under a shelter-in-place alert for over two hours as a result of the shooting.

The suspect is still at large. Scanner traffic indicated police were searching for a male on foot, 6’2″, in jeans and wearing a black hoodie and a black mask in connection with the shooting.
