Thiel Eclipses 1,000 Points as Perham beats Hawley; Yellowjackets improve to 11-1

PERHAM, MN (KDLM/KPRW) – The Perham Yellowjackets improved to 11-1 on Friday night with a 59-54 win over the Hawley Nuggets.

The game began with all eyes on Perham junior Willow Thiel, who entered the game 10 points shy of 1,000 career points. Thiel finished with a game-high 22 and 1012 career points, becoming the 14th Yellowjacket player to eclipse the 1,000 point mark. The school record is 1,563 by Katrina Moenkedick.

The Nuggets had two early leads, but the Yellowjackets took the lead and never looked back. The Nuggets made a few runs, including one late, as they got to within 57-54, but Perham hit the remaining two free throws to pick up their 11th win against one loss.  Hawley fell to 7-5.

Hawley was led by Izzy Steer’s 20 points.

The Hawley Boys basketball team is in action Saturday, as one of seven featured games in the Perham Breakdown Classic. They will play Annandale at 4:45 pm on KRCQ. The action in Perham gets underway at 10:30 am with Nevis vs Fosston and finishes off late with the Perham Boys basketball team hosting Fergus Falls.

The Perham girls will face Fergus Falls in the Crossover Classic at 6:30.
