Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) –
The Laker boys hockey team fell to the Bemidji Lumberjacks on Thursday night 3-0 at the Kent Freeman Arena. The Lumberjacks scored a late powerplay goal in the second and two goals in the third to earn their sixth straight victory and improve to 9-6 overall.
The Lakers and Lumberjacks were scoreless after the first period, with good back-and-forth hockey on display. The Lakers were able to match the speed of the Lumberjacks but gave up a powerplay goal with 1:15 left when Cael Knutson scored the game’s first goal. DL has struggled on the penalty kill this year, with a penalty kill percentage of 67%.
The Lumberjacks carried the momentum into the third period when Knutson scored his second goal on a shot that was redirected off a skate of a Laker defender to make the score 2-0 a the 3:34 mark of the period. The Lumberjacks got a late insurance goal when Wyatt Mattfield scored from the front of the net after receiving a beautiful pass from Dominic Arndt.
Laker goalie Josh Mack played confidently throughout the game and made 27 saves. The Laker offense continues to struggle and has not scored a goal in the last two games. Detroit Lakes generated 20 shots on goal, but Bemidji goalie Tate Metcalf earned his second shutout of the year.
Detroit Lakes falls to 9-4-1 and will look to get back in the win column next Thursday night when they travel to Long Prairie to take on Prairie Center (5-5).
