Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Becker County Sherrif Todd Glander is projected to defeat challenger Chad Peterson. With 19 of 47 precincts reporting, Glander was leading Peterson 81% (6,941) to 19% (1,657).
“It’s humbling and an honor to be able to serve the residents of Becker County again,” Glander told KDLM on Tuesday night. “I grew up here and I want to give back to the people that have supported me through the years,”
With the election out of the way, Glander says he can return to dealing with several issues within the department, the number one issue being staff retention.
“One of the issues that we’re continuing to deal with is retaining employees,” said Glander. “It’s not just us…it’s a state-wide and nation-wide issue. We want to keep the employees that we have. There are some awesome people that work for the county and we want to keep them here. The county has gained about 5,000 residents since 1999 but, up until recently, we hadn’t gained any staff.”
Two of the big changes under Glander during the last four years have been the expansion of Becker County Sheriff officers on staff and the opening of the new jail facility.
“One of the big things over the last four years has been making sure that we had enough staff to adequately serve the residents of the county,” said Glander. “We were able to work with the county commissioners to secure funds for additional staffing. And the jail…before we built that jail we were budgeting half a million dollars a year in boarding out prisoners. Last year, we were able to bring in about $530,000. That reflects on the staff that we have.”
Glander has served as Becker County Sheriff since 2015.
