Breckenridge, Barnesville, Moorhead All Heading To State Football Tournament

(KDLM) – The participants of the 2022 State Football tournaments are set after the conclusion of section championships on Friday, and three more area teams will compete for section championships in their respective conferences.

The Barnesville Trojans are the champions of 8AA after a dominating 56-3 win over Crookston at the Fargodome on Friday night. Barnesville is now in the state tournament for the sixth straight season, looking for their first Class AA Championship. The Trojans finished runner-up in 2018. The Trojans enter the tournament 10-0 and ranked #3 in Class AA. They’ll open the tournament vs Moose Lake-Willow River at 7:00 on Friday, November 11th at St. Cloud Tech High School.

The cinderella run of the 5-seed Breckenridge Cowboys will continue to the Class A state tournament after they beat Ottertail Central 34-6 to advance to their first state tournament since 2008. Breckenridge, ranked #22 in the QRF entering the tournament, only allowed six points in three section playoff games this season, shutting out both Menahga and defending-section champion New York Mills along the way. The Cowboys will face the champions of 7A Minneota at 7:00 in Alexandria on Friday, November 11th. The Cowboys are seeking their first state championship since 1988.

The Moorhead Spuds, who won three games during the regular season, are back in the state tournament after holding on to beat Sartell-St. Stephen 28-26 in the 8AAAAA championship on Friday night. The Spuds will face 7AAAAA champion Elk River in the first round of the state tournament this Friday at 7:00 at Maple Grove High School. The Elks, the #3 team in Class 5-A, beat the Spuds 55-21 on October 7th.

Mahnomen-Waubun, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, and Fertile-Beltrami all won section championships on Thursday.

The first round of the state tournaments are all at neutral sites. Semifinal and championship games will be at US Bank Stadium.
