Mahnomen-Waubun, DGF among first teams to punch tickets to State Football Tournament

(KDLM) – The first couple of teams punched their tickets to the 2022 State Football tournament on the first day of section championship games on Thursday.

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton held on to beat East Grand Forks in the Section 8AAA championship game 7-6 to keep their undefeated season alive and advance to the Class AAA tournament for a second consecutive season. EGF scored a touchdown with under a minute left, but couldn’t convert the two-point try to take the lead.

The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons are back in the state tournament after beating Blackduck 46-14. They are the champions of 9 Man Section 6. The Falcons also bring a perfect record into the state tournament.

The Mahnomen-Waubun Thunderbirds are back in the State Tournament after shutting out Red Lake County 32-0 last night. They’ll represent Section 8A in the Class A tournament. Mahnomen-Waubun coach John Clark is now 14-1 all-time in section championship games.

The rest of the section championship games will be played on Friday, and include Wheaton-Herman-Norcross vs Verndale in the 9-Man Section 4 championship at 10 am at the Fargodome. In 6AA, Osakis will play Sauk Centre at 3:00, In 8AAAAA, Sartell-St. Stephen plays Moorhead at 7:00. In 8AA, Barnesville will face Crookston at 8:00.
