GLYNDON, MN (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes took a seven-point lead late in the third quarter, but 14 unanswered points by the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels
Both teams put together touchdown drives on their first drives of the game. DGF got things started with an Owen Leach touchdown pass to Bodey DeVries on a fourth-and-12 situation to give DGF a 7-0 lead. DL put together a touchdown drive of their own, aided by a personal foul horsecollar tackle committed on Cody Bartness. Ethan Carrier scored from five yards out to tie the game at 7-7.
Momentum appeared to be swinging in Detroit Lakes’ favor after Will Martin recovered an Owen Leach fumble with 1:22 left in the first quarter, but the Laker offense went three and out and punted the ball to DGF. The Rebels responded with a long touchdown drive, capped off by a fourth and goal touchdown by Jordan Summers from the one-yard line as DGF took a 14-7 lead into the half.
The third quarter was full of big offensive plays for the Lakers. Their first drive of the second half was finished by a 57-yard touchdown catch and run by Hunter Korth to tie the game at 14-14. The Laker defense stuffed DGF on a fourth-and-inches conversion, then Mason Carrier took the next play 77-yards for a 21-14 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter.
DGF marched down the field to score again, another touchdown courtesy of Summers, to tie the game 21-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
After another Laker drive stalled out, the Lakers punted back to DL and was helped out with an illegal block penalty that put DGF at their own eight-yard line. But a 36-yard run by Summers on first down got the ball to midfield, and the Rebels rode Summers to the three-yard line, where Nick Waale punched it in from three yards out to retake the lead for DGF 28-21 with 1:50 left in the game. Waale then picked off Mason Carrier to seal the victory for DGF, who moves to 8-0 on the season.
The Lakers finish the regular season 5-3 and will await Section 8AAAA seeding next week. Likely, the Lakers will finish as the three seed in the section and will travel to Rocori on Saturday, October 29th.
