Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – A festive Homecoming Week for Detroit Lakes wrapped up at Mollberg Field on Friday night with the Barnesville Trojans defeating the Lakers 28-13.
The Lakers, who have now dropped back-to-back games after a 4-0 start to the season, struggled offensively against a stout Barnesville team that is ranked #4 in the state in Class AA and features a defense that entered the game only allowing an average of two points per game.
After losing quarterback Caden Strand to a broken ankle in a 35-21 loss to Pequot Lakes last week, sophomore Nick Buboltz got his first varsity start at quarterback.
Barnesville scored on their opening drive of the game, which was kept alive after a third-down personal foul (horse-collar tackle) on a sack of Owen Riddle made a fourth and long from deep in Barnesville territory a first down from mid-field. John Roller scored from five yards out to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead…a lead they would never give up.
In the second quarter, Barnesville drove down to the Laker red zone, where the Laker D stood firm enough to force a fourth and goal from the three. The Trojans brought in their big package, with 6’3, 265 tight end Tate Inniger under center. Inniger threw a pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage but somehow found its way into the arms of Isaac Maneval for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead. The Lakers threatened to put points on the board on their final drive of the first half, but a fourth-down conversion pass by Buboltz at the Barnesville 30 was incomplete.

The Lakers started the second half with the ball, but their first drive stalled inside the Barnesville 30-yard line again on a failed fourth-down conversion. Barnesville would punt the ball back to Detroit Lakes following their next drive, pinning the Lakers inside their 10-yard line. The Lakers would go three-and-out and punt the ball back to Barnesville, but a Charlie Kalina punt only netted 28 yards. The Lakers’ defense forced a fumble, recovered by Cade Jackson to give the ball back to Detroit Lakes to end the third quarter.

Facing a fourth and one, the Lakers offense took a delay of game penalty, which backed them up five yards. They then attempted a fake punt, which fell incomplete to set up Barnesville up with great field position. The Trojans took full advantage, with Andrew Pederson scoring a two-yard touchdown to take a 21-0 lead with 7:18 left in the game.
The Lakers offense would finally figure out the Barnesville defense in the third quarter, with the offensive line helping senior Ethan Carrier break off a 55-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit back to 14 points, 21-7. Carrier finished the game with 12 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Buboltz would attempt the onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, which was nearly recovered by the Lakers. Instead, the Trojans milked the clock, eventually scoring again…another touchdown by Pederson for a 28-7 lead.
In the closing seconds of the game, Mason Carrier connected with Breck Winter on a 30-yard touchdown as time expired to get the Lakers their second touchdown of the quarter and made the score look a little more respectable in a 28-13 loss.
