DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The outcome was never in question on Tuesday night as the Lakers boys soccer team cruised to their 10th win of the season at home against Pelican Rapids. The Lakers beat the Vikings 7-1 behind a four-goal performance by senior Avery Young.
Young scored the game’s first goal in the first five minutes as he received the ball after goalkeeper Evan Thomas punted the ball that bounced deep into Pelican Rapids territory. Young drove the ball to the net, beating the goalkeeper Ivan Franco to make the score 1-0. With 18 minutes left in the first half, the Lakers scored their second goal of the game when Bryce Skalland passed it to Davide Giambellini, who scored on a one-timer in front, beating the keeper to the far right. DL’s Thomas picked up his second assist on a keeper kick when he again launched the ball deep into Vikings territory. Giambellini picked up the pass and made two hard strides to the net, scoring in stride and putting the Lakers up 3-0. The Lakers ended the first half leading 4-0 as Mason Frank added an insurance goal before halftime.
In the second half, Young added three more goals to the scoreboard. Young leads the Lakers in scoring this season with 22 goals.
Defensively the Lakers held the Vikings to just seven shots on the net. The Vikings broke the shutout with 15 minutes left to go in regulation when striker Hamse Mohamed beat Thomas through the five hole.
The win improves DL’s record to 10-5 overall, and they will wrap up the regular season on Thursday when they host Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. The playoff seeds will be announced on Sunday for Section 8AA. The Lakers will likely be the number four seed in the playoffs and will likely be hosting a first-round match on Thursday, October 13th.
