Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Day Two of the 90th Annual Pine to Palm Golf Tournament is in the books. Ian Simonich, the 2020 Pine to Palm champion, paced the field at the Detroit Country Club on Tuesday with a -6 65.
“Six birdies, no bogies put me at 65 and I’ll take it,” Simonich told KDLM’s Andy Lia following his Tuesday round. “I hit my driver well and felt like I could make everything on these greens. There’s just something about these Detroit Lakes greens…when they’re fast and moving well I feel like I can make about anything.”
Seven golfers shot -4 (67) yesterday, including last year’s runner-up and 2014 Pine to Palm champion Ben Welle (West Fargo).
“It’s good to be back again this year,” said Welle. “This is my first time playing this course this year. My round today was pretty solid. I hit a lot of greens and didn’t make a lot of mistakes. I was about 130 yards out on Hole 13 and was able to one-hop onto the green and put it in for an eagle. I started on the back nine today, so an eagle on my fourth hole of the day was a fun way to start.”
Jackson Worner (West Fargo), Jacob Skarperud (Fargo), Jack Michel (Waconia), Blake Schuler (Waconia), Zach Kappes (Moorhead), and Kyler Schwamb (Farmington) are tied with Welle at -4.
Local golfer scores from Day Two of the Pine to Palm: Casey Nelson is tied for 21st at one under, Carter Justesen of Hawley and Lukas Justesen of Detroit Lakes are both one over par, Markus Belka of Perham is also one over, Wyatt Blomseth of Detroit Lakes is three over, Austin Rusness of Detroit Lakes if +4, as is Cameron Rall of Lake Park and Jack Justesen of Hawley, Nick Tobkin and Michael Herzog, both of Detroit Lakes are tied for 91st with a +5.
The cut for yesterday’s round was seven over par, which leaves 143 golfers in the field for the Pine to Palm Championship.
The third day of stroke play begins Wednesday at 7:05 am before match-play pairings begin on Thursday.
