22nd Annual KDLM Laker Open Is Friday, August 19th

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The 22nd annual KDLM/Team Lab Laker Open, which benefits the Detroit Lakes High School activities, is on Friday, August 19th at the Detroit Country Club and Lakeview Golf Course. Since the first Laker Open in 2000, the event has raised well over a half-million dollars for DLHS activities.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year for Laker Boosters,” says Detroit Lakes AD Rob Nielsen. “It’s become a huge event. It’s been a $60,000 day for our boosters and 100% of that money gets filtered back into our activities account. the number of things that our programs are able to benefit from the funds raised from events like this has been amazing.”

The entry fee for the event is $105.00 per person.  Your entry fee includes lunch, a tournament gift, 18 holes of golf, a golf cart (2 per team), one drink ticket, door prizes, and dinner.

One of the benefits of the Laker Open is that it assists in keeping activity fees for sports/activities at Detroit Lakes Public Schools among the lowest in the area, which has given the district great participation numbers.

“Participation in activities while in school is one of the biggest indicators of student success.” Says coach Vern Schnathorst. “We want all kids to do something besides classes when they are in school.  It’s another great arena to teach life skills and for them to bond/make friends and enjoy their experience. Our Booster Club is unique in that it helps support all sports and activities, not just one sport like most booster clubs.  That allows the smaller sports or sports with less exposure and activities to access funds for things they need and to assist in improving the quality of experience for those kids in those activities.“

The Laker Open was started in 2000 by then-Athletic Director Rick Manke and Ross Fortier, a former football coach at Moorhead State.
