ST. PAUL (KDLM/MNN) – Republican rival Scott Jensen is challenging Governor Tim Walz to “prove this isn’t a gimmick” and call the legislature back for a special session to approve using a chunk of the state’s budget surplus for “Walz checks.”
“The idea of saying, we owe you a dollar but we’re gonna give you 50 cents and we’re hoping that you’ll be happy with that — that doesn’t strike a chord that I think Minnesotans are going to be impressed with,” said Jensen.
Jensen says the Governor also has a problem that the DFL-controlled House is not likely to go along with it. House Speaker Melissa Hortman said Monday she hasn’t brought it to the DFL Caucus but “my sense is that they would approve.” But Hortman notes the 15-minute special session the governor is talking about “would require willing participation by the House GOP.”
