A preliminary design option for a remodel of Detroit Lakes City Hall
DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes City Council was given an updated presentation and floorplan of a proposed remodel of Detroit Lakes City Hall.
The remodel would incorporate the “old liquor store”, which has been sitting empty for nearly 10 years creating a new front entrance and parking on Frazee Street, a new and larger council chamber, updated office spaces and public meeting room.
“There’s a lot of people that don’t realize there is a city hall in this building, it’s in desperate need of a facelift,” said Matt Malone with BHH Partners an architecture firm based out of Perham.
The 18,000 square foot building, which was originally a bottling warehouse was built in the 1950s with the last major renovation occurring in 1979. The proposed renovation would increase the building’s size by 3,400 square feet.
Preliminary project costs in December 2021 were $4.35 million, those costs have now risen to $5.7 million. City leaders, however believe they’ll be able to fund the majority of the project using the city’s liquor fund and electric utility fund.
The City hasn’t taken any official action, yet, but hope to have the project out for bid by September and begin construction later this fall.
