(KNSI) – Highly pathogenic avian influenza has affected millions of birds across the country, and it is beginning to show up at the grocery store. According to last week’s Consumer Price Index report, eggs soared by 5% in May alone.
Food prices are up sharply compared to last year, rising by 10.6%, which is well above the general rate of inflation. Eggs are lapping other components, though. The next worst was dairy, which popped by 2.9%. That represents the largest monthly rise for milk and butter since July 2007.
Cereal, breads, meat, poultry, fish, and fruits and vegetables all saw milder increases. As you begin to plan for summer barbecues in time for Father’s Day and the Fourth of July, a tweak of the menu can help keep costs manageable.
