COLD SPRING (KDLM) – The Laker softball team saw their season end on Tuesday afternoon in the elimination bracket of the Section 8AAA playoff semifinals. Detroit Lakes lost to Little Falls 10-6. The game was played in Cold Spring on a windy afternoon.
Despite jumping out to a 3-run lead in the 1st inning, the Lakers could not maintain the lead and gave up 6-runs in the bottom of the first. The Lakers allowed two more runs in the 2nd inning and fell behind 8-3. The Lakers fell behind 10-3 in the bottom of the 5th inning as the Flyers took advantage of an outfield error by Detroit Lakes. The Lakers scored three runs over the final two innings, but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback.
The Laker offense did show up in the game as it had 12 hits in the ballgame. Senior Emma Coley and junior Ellie Lunde accounted for 6 of the 12 hits. The Flyers had 11 hits in the game and reached base seven times from walks surrendered by the Laker pitchers. Sydney Borgman started the game for Detroit Lakes, allowed eight runs on nine hits, gave up six walks, and struck out three batters. Emma Coley relieved Borgman in the 5th inning, gave up two runs on two hits, walked one batter, and struck out 2 Flyers.
The Flyers were led by their starting pitcher Korrin Gwost who had the complete-game victory. Ghost only struck out 1 Laker over seven innings, but she relied on her defense to get her outs.
The Flyers advanced and beat the Alexandria Cardinals later that afternoon 8-3. The Flyers had a 6-run 5th inning that made the difference in the contest with the Cardinals. Little Falls will take on the number one seeded Rocori Spartans, who have yet to lose a game in the playoffs this season. The Flyers would have to beat Rocori twice on Thursday if they want to advance to the Class AAA State Softball tournament.
The Lakers finished the season with an overall record of 6-15. Detroit Lakes graduates four seniors from this year’s team: Siri Vagle, Christiana Sandoval, Emma Coley, and Kacy Schiltz.
