Despite Record High Gas Prices Vacationers will Likely Flock to Lakes Area over Memorial Day Weekend

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Gas prices are at record highs, but many vacationers plan to travel to the Lakes Area this weekend.

“Gas prices do play a factor in how people are thinking about travel both for this weekend and going forward but despite the high gas prices we are seeing that people are still going to be taking these trips,” said AAA Minnesota spokeswoman Meredith Mitts.

AAA does say they have seen some families cancel longer summer trips though due to high gas prices and may begin to see more in the coming weeks as the summer travel season ramps up. That could play an impact in the summer economic outlook of seasonal businesses that rely on vacationers throughout the summer months.

The average for a gallon of unleaded gas in the Lakes Area is $4.29. The national average is $4.60.
