LISTEN: Spring Coaches Recap Season For Laker Sports

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Booster Club held their final meeting of the 2021-22 academic year at the Holiday Inn at noon on Wednesday. On hand were a number of Laker coaches and some seniors to recap their seasons and preview what’s coming up for their respective end-of-season tournaments.

Tennis coach Zach Bigger gave a recap of his team’s season; a team that beat Moorhead in the section tournament before giving Bemidji a run for their money in the next round. Laker Tennis has two athletes (Reed Henderson and Nate Cihak) that advanced to the section meet, which is being held in St. Cloud today

Coach Bigger was joined by three of his senior athletes: Gavin Smith, Gabe Reller, and Elijah Blow:

Laker Track and Field head coaches Maggy Doll (girls) and Dylan Surface (boys) talked about their seasons. Both programs have a number of athletes that are ranked in the top two in the state in their respective events. The Section Track and Field prelims will be held in Detroit Lakes on Wednesday, June 1 and the finals will be in Alexandria on Saturday, June 4.

Laker girls golf coach Dustin Martin was at the meeting to talk about his team’s season so far. Laker golf will be in Cold Spring next Tuesday and Wednesday for the 8AAA Section Tournament.

Laker golf has one senior on the team this season: McKenna Mallow, who is currently the 12th-ranked golfer in the state. Mallow will be attending the University of Northern Iowa to study communication disorders and golf for the DI Panthers.

Cory Havercamp is the first-year head coach of the Laker Trap Shooting Team. He’ll have some kids participating in the State Meet coming up in Alexandria June 13th-21st.

Coach Havercamp was joined by three of his seniors: Tobias Muff, Cole Weber, and Clint Andrisen.

Laker Baseball coach Terry Eiter, who is retiring from teaching after 36 years, will lead his team into their regular-season finale this afternoon in Alexandria. Laker baseball will begin its section tournament next Tuesday.

With the Laker Boys Golf Team on the road in Brainerd yesterday, the team was represented at the luncheon by assistant coach Jay Peterson.

Laker softball was the lone team not represented at the luncheon. Coach Sydney Prussia and the softball team is traveling to ROCORI today for their second game of the Section 8AAA tournament. They lost to Alexandria on Tuesday and will face the loser of Rocori vs Willmar at 6:00 tonight in the double-elimination tournament. If the Laker win, they’ll play again next Tuesday as they try to climb back through the elimination bracket. If they lose tonight, their season is over. KDLM will broadcast the game tonight at 6:00, with the pre-game show starting around 5:45.
