City of Detroit Lakes Asks Residents To Limit Water Usage During Sewer Overload

By Zeke Fuhrman May 12, 2022 | 1:17 PM

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The City of Detroit Public Utilities is urging city residents to switch to sump pumps and limit water usage as the city deals with a sewer system overload. Sump pumps discharging outside helps the sewer system during major rain events, which could cause sewage backup issues.

According to a press release from the City, all sump pumps in Detroit Lakes must switch to discharge outside beginning on March 15th. This is required for the city to meet the requirements of the US Environmental Protection Agency to have separate stormwater and sanitary sewer water systems.

Sump pumps water diverted outside should drain away from buildings to prevent recirculation. The City recommends discharging into backyards and coordinating with neighbors to ensure sump pump water is not causing drainage concerns.
