DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The local Detroit Lakes VFW is participating in the first annual VFW Day of Service.
The VFW Day of Service will be held nationwide on Saturday, May 7 and throughout the month of May and is a day set aside for veteran-led local community service events to bring recognition to how much U.S. military veterans continue to serve in their communities after they take off their uniforms.
Veterans from around the Lakes Area will participate in community service projects throughout the month. To honor Veterans, the Detroit Lakes VFW will serve a free pulled pork dinner including coleslaw and chips to all active and retired military members with an ID on Monday, May 9 beginning at 4:30 p.m. followed by their weekly bingo night.
“The positive feedback from VFW members and the communities we serve tells us the stage is set to expand our #StillServing initiative,” said Fritz Mihelcic, VFW national commander. “We have already seen how the campaign amplifies the volunteer efforts and camaraderie of America’s veterans. The time is now to take its visibility to the next level.”
The VFW Day of Service is an outgrowth of the organization’s #StillServing campaign.
