ST. PAUL, MN (KDLM) – A number of area athletes competed in the invite-only Hamline Elite Meet on Friday afternoon in St. Paul.
The Elite Meet, which returned for the first time since 2019, features some of the state’s top talent, combining the best of the best across all classes in Minnesota at one meet and features a number of Division I recruits across all classes.
A number of area athletes, including representatives from Moorhead, Perham, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Wadena-Deer Creek, Fergus Falls, Detroit Lakes and Nevis competed on Friday afternoon in St. Paul.
Detroit Lakes junior Abby Larson qualified for the Elite Meet in the 100m, where she finished 12th in the prelims with a time of 12.70 (Emily Anderson of Centennial won the 100m finals with a time of 12.11). The Laker 4×200 team of Larson, Sasha Sekundiak, Mallory Fischer and Annie Paulson finished ninth with a time of 1:48.56. (Rosemount’s winning time was 1:44.30)

The Perham Yellowjacket track and field team sent three representatives to Hamline: seniors Jakob McCleary and Levi Richter and sophomore Jaden Hackel. Gopher-commit McCleary competed in the 800m and 1600m. He finished 12th in the 800 with a time of 2:00.56 (Ramy Ayoub of Farmington won the race with a time of 1:56.08), and 11th in the 1600m with a time of 4:27.31 (Lakeville North’s Andrew Casey had the winning time of 4:16.35). Richter, who will compete for the NDSU Bison next season, finished 10th in the Pole Vault with a 12-06 (Jared White of Pine Island cleared 15-03 to win the meet). Hackel finished ninth in the Triple Jump with a 35-00.75 (Rosemount’s Ava Cinnamo won the contest with a 39-08.50).
Seniors Ainsley Hanson and Jordan Lee and junior Alexander Jensen represented Fergus Falls at the Elite Meet, and went home with three top-six finishes. Hanson finished second in the High Jump with a jump of 5-04.00, second only to Gopher basketball-commit Niamya Halloway of Eden Prairie’s 5-05.00. Lee finished sixth in the Pole Vault with a 13-00.00, and Jensen finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 52-03.25 (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s Tony Nelson set a meet record with a throw of 61-04.75. Nelson will play football for the Gophers in the fall.)
Reigning Class A state champion Nevis junior Jade Rypkema won the 3200m with a time of 10:45.59 (she won state last year with a time of 10:54.32). Rypkema finished fifth in the Class A State Cross Country Meet last November, and beat out state cross country champion Amanda Overgaauw of Murray County Central by five seconds in the 3200m on Friday.
The Moorhead Spuds saw two new school records at Hamline. Senior Alonn Salman broke Moorhead’s 37-year-old school record (10.70) in the 100m with a time of 10.66, good for a second place finish to Spectrum’s Max Reis who set the meet record with a 10.53. Salman also ran a 10.74 in the prelims. Senior Jamal Dixon ran a 11.09 in the prelims. Dixon also finished fourth in the High Jump with a jump of 6-05.00. The Spuds 4×200 team of Salman, Dixon, Karson Wendt and Abraham Carlson set a school record with a first-place finish of 1:29.54. Junior Michael Haugo competed in four events, finishing eighth in the 200m (23.24), fourth in the Long Jump (21-03.50), ninth in the Triple Jump (41-11.50), and finished second on the 4×100 team with Wendt, Dixon and Salman (42.55).
