SIOUX FALLS, SD (KDLM) – The Augustana University Men’s Hockey program introduced its first-ever head coach at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Detroit Lakes native Garrett Raboin has been hired as the inaugural head coach of the Viking Hockey program.
“We have the unique opportunity to build this program from the ground up,” Raboin said at his introductory press conference. “We’re gonna build this program the only way I know how: by surrounding ourselves with great people and recruiting young men who are excited to go work. I can promise you that our group will approach athletics, academics, and service to the community with a blue-collar mentality in which we roll up our sleeves and go to work just as so many people in South Dakota do every day.”
“We started this process looking for someone who can build a nationally competitive men’s hockey program that competes at Division I and we sure found him,” Augustana AD Josh Morton said. “Garrett is a proven winner, excellent recruiter, and will help us build community excitement for Augustana hockey. He is a great addition and will add to the excellence of Augustana athletics.
Raboin has been an assistant on Bob Motzko’s staff at the University of Minnesota for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he coached under Motzko at his alma mater St. Cloud State University for six seasons.
In his six years with the Huskies, Raboin helped St. Cloud State to five NCAA tournament berths, including a Frozen Four appearance in 2013. The program also claimed three regular-season conference championships, including the 2017 NCHC Penrose Cup. At SCSU, Raboin coached six All-Americans, including the 2013 Hobey Baker Award winner Drew LaBlanc.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Raboin has served on the USA Hockey coaching staff for a number of development camps.
The Augustana Vikings will become South Dakota’s DI college hockey program in the state when they begin play in the fall of 2023. They’ll play in the brand new Midco Arena, a $40 million facility currently under construction on the campus in Sioux Falls.
