(KDLM) – Look away, Minnesota hockey fans. Gopher Hockey captain Ben Meyers has signed a pro contract with the Minnesota Wild’s biggest rival, the Colorado Avalanche.
Meyers, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, U.S. Olympian, and Hobey Baker finalist, signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Avs on Wednesday.

Meyers was the most sought-after college free agent this season. The Delano-native led the Gophers to the Big Ten regular-season title and the program’s first NCAA Frozen Four appearance since 2014. He led Minnesota with 17 goals and 41 points (both career highs for the junior) in 34 games.
Meyers was also one of four Gophers on the USA Hockey Olympic Team in Beijing this past February where he finished second among U.S. scorers with four points (two goals, two assists) in four games.
Prior to joining the Gophers, Meyers helped the Fargo Force capture the organization’s first USHL Clark Cup in 2018 and captained Delano High School to its first state tournament appearance in 2017.
Meyers is eligible to report to the Avs for the remainder of the regular season. However, he will not be eligible for postseason play.
