MOORHEAD (KDLM/MNN) – Governor Tim Walz visited Minnesota State University Moorhead, Tuesday touting his plan for “Walz checks”.
The checks would give $1,000 to married couples and $500 to singles. Walz says the state is in a strong position because of the large budget surplus, “Minnesota’s in a strong position, first and foremost to make sure that we’re able to lower taxes on the middle class, we’re able to return checks to folks right now.”
GOP lawmakers, however argue the huge surplus proves state government is over-collecting and Minnesotans deserve permanent tax cuts. Clay County Republican Party Chairman Rodney Johnson says the governor and Democrats “only offer another gimmicky, one-time spending spree — even as inflation hits another record high.”
