ST. PAUL (KDLM) – The Lakers girls basketball team used hard work and momentum to defeat the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks in the Class 3A consolation semifinals on Thursday night at the Gangelhoff Center at Concordia University. Detroit Lakes built momentum towards the end of the first half and fended off a late push by Grand Rapids to beat the Thunderhawks 55-49.
DL’s Ella Okeson provided some jump in the first half when she scored on a takeaway. Okeson led the Lakers at the halftime break with nine points. The Lakers also relied on big offensive rebounds by Elle Bettcher and Jacee Hauser to end the first half in the lead at 30-25.
Thanks to that late first-half momentum, Detroit Lakes built an even bigger lead in the second half. Detroit Lakes was up at one point 42-30. The Thunderhawks were able to somewhat break out of their scoring slump as they relied on Jessica Lofstrom and Taryn Hamling, who led the way in scoring for the Thunderhawks as they had a combined 30 points. Hamling and Lofstrom fouled out of the game late in the second half and were not on the floor in the final minutes.
After going on a scoring run, the Thunderhawks cut the deficit to three points with around seven minutes left in regulation. With the game back to a one-possession lead, the Lakers relied on clutch free throws from Abby Larson and Helena Daggett to secure the victory.
The Lakers improve their record to 15-13 and continue their season tomorrow when they take on the Austin Packers in the consolation finals at 4 pm at the Gangelhoff Center. The Thunderhawks see their season end as they finish at 24-6.
KDLM will broadcast the consolation finals with pregame coverage beginning at 3 pm on Friday.
