MINNEAPOLIS (KDLM) – The Laker girls basketball team saw their state championship dreams end as they fell in the state quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon as the Lakers lost to the Totino-Grace Eagles by a final score of 64-43.
Detroit Lakes led briefly in the early minutes of the game 5-2, but Totino Grace was able to respond with quick offense thanks to solid play with points from their fastbreak. The Eagles took the lead at 7-5 when Abby Lord made a three-pointer with 14:55 remaining in the first half. The Eagles never trailed again as they went on a 12-0 run to make the score 16-5.
The Eagles went on to outscore Detroit Lakes 39-15 at the end of the first half. Abby Lord led the Eagles in the first half, as she finished the half with 15 points. Hannah Herzig was also strong for the Eagles as she finished the first half with 14 points and four steals.
The Lakers were able to get more comfortable in the second half and cut the deficit to 13 points when Jacee Hauser made a three-pointer with 7:23 left in the half. Hauser finished the second half with 15 points and was the leading scorer for the Lakers, with all of her points coming in the second half. Detroit Lakes outscored Totino-Grace 28-25 in the second half.
The Lakers as a team finished the game shooting 31% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. The Eagles finished the game shooting 41% from the field and just 11% from three-point range. The Eagles were led by Hannah Herzig, who finished the game with 17 points and ten rebounds. Detroit Lakes was led by Jacee Hauser, who finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
The loss drops Detroit Lakes into the consolation bracket, and they will hope to keep their season alive on Thursday against Grand Rapids. The Lakers are now 14-13 overall and will play the Thunderhawks, who lost in their quarterfinal game to St. Paul Como Park 76-57.
