MINNEAPOLIS (KDLM) – With the conclusion of Section Team Wrestling tournaments over the weekend, the field for the 2022 Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament is set. The MSHL released seeding and brackets for the three-class, eight-team tournaments that will begin on March 3rd at the Xcel Energy Center.
Dover-Eyota came from behind to beat Chatfield 33-3 for the 1A Section title. Maple River defeated Medford 42-22 to win Section 2A. The champions of Section 3A, Jackson County Central, beat Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 63-6 to advance to the state tournament. Kimball Area only allowed 15 total points as they rolled through the Section 4A tournament, beating Howard Lake-Waverly-Winstead 55-8. In Section 5A, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa defeated Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 45-17. West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville defeated Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie 51-21 to win Section 6A. Royalton/Upsala beat Holdingford 40-23 for the Section 7A title, and United North Central rolled Frazee 44-19 to win Section 8A.
In Class AA, Kasson-Mantorville defeated Zumbrota-Mazeppa 51-16 to repeat as Section 1AA champions. Watertown-Mayer won the final three matches of their 2AA section title match with New Prague to clip the Trojans 31-30. Fairmont won the Section 3AA title with a 32-25 victory over Hutchinson. Simley shut out the South St. Paul Packers 81-0 and recorded 11 pinfalls in the Section 4AA championship. Totino-Grace won the 5AA championship with a 66-18 win over Bloomington Kennedy. Becker defeated Big Lake 45-21 for the Section 6AA title, Mora won Section 7AA with a 34-27 win over Aitkin, and Thief River Falls got a heavyweight pin from Collin Bruggeman to clinch the Section 8AA title over Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus 36-33.
In Class AAA, Section 1 will be represented by Northfield after they defeated Faribault in their section championship match. Apple Valley defeated Farmington 37-24 to win Section 2AAA. Hastings won Section 3AAA over Park 59-13. Stillwater won 4AAA 45-13 over Mounds View, STMA beat Wayzata 49-20 to win Section 5AAA, Shakopee returned to State with a 35-30 win over Waconia to repeat as Section 6AAA champions, Anoka beat Forest Lake 41-31 for the Section 7AAA title, and Willmar stunned Bemidji 29-25 to represent Section 8AAA.
The State Wrestling Tournament begins on March 3rd at the Xcel Energy Center. Individual Section Tournaments begin this Friday. You can view the MSHSL brackets here.
