DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – An apartment fire Saturday that displaced a number of residents in Detroit Lakes also interrupted a Lakes Area child’s birthday celebration.

Staff from the Detroit Lakes Police Department, Salvation Army, Faith Lutheran Church and Becker County Sheriff’s Office came together to help Poppi, a young Detroit Lakes child celebrate her birthday.

Poppi and her mom were given a birthday cake and cupcakes, Saturday while firefighters extinguished flames in their building. Juliette Omundson, Poppi’s mother posted a video of Poppi on social media recently thanking the community for their kindness, “I like how all you guys helped us, I really appreciate it and everyone wishing me a happy birthday because it was turning out to be a bad day until all you guys came.”

The Red Cross has put Poppi and her mother in a hotel until they can get back into their home.
