Laker Girls Pick Up 2nd Conference Win

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Laker girls basketball team picked up their second conference win, beating Aitkin 59-19. Tuesday night’s game saw featured ten different Lakers finding the scoresheet. The Lakers improved their record to 2-1 in the Midstate Conference.

Despite a sluggish start to the game, Detroit Lakes went into halftime with a 33-13 lead. Helena Daggett led Detroit Lakes with 9 points. The Lakers starters accounted for 33 of the 59 points in the game.

According to Aitkin’s head coach Mike Reem, the Gobblers were without 3 of their five starters because of injury. The Gobblers only dressed eight players on Tuesday night.

The win improves Detroit Lakes’ overall record to 3-8 on the season. Detroit Lakes has won every meeting against the Gobblers going back to 2018.

The Gobblers fall to 6-10 and have lost five straight games.

Next up, DL will travel to Alexandria to take on the Cardinals on Thursday night. DL and Alex have yet to meet this season, with the first meeting being postponed last week because of inclement weather. The Lakers, who are 0-4 in away games this season, will look for their first road win of the season.

Boys Basketball: The Laker boys basketball team fell on the road on Tuesday night to the Alexandria Cardinals 85-52. The loss drops the Lakers’ record to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in Section 8AAA. Detroit Lakes will look to rebound on Thursday when they host Aitkin. The Gobblers are also 3-9 on the season and have lost three straight games.

Girls Hockey: On Tuesday night, the Laker girls hockey team snapped an 11-game losing streak, beating International Falls 11-0. According to the team’s Twitter page, it was the first career shutout for goal Emma Wahl. Detroit Lakes improves their record to 4-15, and they are now 2-3 in section games. They return to the ice on Thursday when they travel to Breckenridge. DL and Breckenridge/Wahpeton have played once already this season, with the Blades beating the Lakers 9-8 back on November 23rd.
