RED LAKE, MINN. (KFGO) – Two people were rescued after they became trapped on drifting ice on the Red Lake Reservation in northwest Minnesota.

Red Lake Police, conservation offices, and Red Lake Fire responded to a call for help from the ice-fishermen shortly before noon yesterday.

Mutual Aid was requested from the Bemidji Fire Department when it became apparent there was a large amount of open water between the main body of ice and the ice that had drifted away.

The father, 62-year old David Berrard, of Red Lake, and 44-year old Wilfred Berrard, of Blaine, Minnesota were rescued by emergency responders and were safely brought to shore without injury.

The Red Lake Department of Public Safety is warning the public about the dangers of fishing on new ice with high winds.
