DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The ALDI grocery store is scheduled to open in Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

The new store, located off of highway 10 in front of the Boys & Girls Club Thrift Store plans to open at 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18.

One of the important distinctions about shopping at ALDI is that they do not provide you free bags or carts to carry your groceries. You can either bring your own reusable shopping bags to use, or you can use ALDI’s carts, bags or boxes.

ALDI carts are free to use, but you have to pay a quarter to release a cart, and then your quarter is returned once you turn it back in. ALDI also provides plastic and paper grocery bags that you can buy for a minimal fee to take your groceries home.

ALDI stores are known for their no-frills shopping, featuring a variety of items at discount prices, specializing in staple items, such as food, beverages, toilet paper, sanitary articles, and other inexpensive household items. Many of its products are own brands, with the number of other brands usually limited to a maximum of two for a given item.

Though the store plans to open on Saturday, a grand opening for the Detroit Lakes store is scheduled for January.

ALDI currently has 71 locations in Minnesota, including stores in Dilworth, Brainerd, Bemidji, Alexandria, St. Cloud, Little Falls as well as Fargo.
