DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Damien Mitten Tree Project which began more than 50 years ago will continue this year.

More than 50 years ago a local school bus driver had noticed that several kids were getting on his bus without any mittens to keep their hands warm during the cold winter months.

Recipients of the donations include elementary, middle and high school students throughout Becker County as well as others in need.

Donated gloves, mittens, hats and scarves can be hung on Damien Mitten Trees displayed throughout the Lakes Area through Monday, Dec. 20.

Michelle Norby, a Mitten Tree organizer says none of this would be possible without community support, “This is a community supported tree, businesses have trees in the businesses – the community fills them up for us and then we collect all the mittens and deliver them to places that need them.

There are 17 tree locations this year including Bremer Bank Essentia Health, Sanford Health, Central Market, Holiday Inn, Detroit Lakes Public Library, Lakeshirts, DLCCC, Rossman and Roosevelt Schools and others.
