Pelican Rapids Offense Too Much for the Lakers

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – On Thursday night, the Laker boys soccer team fell at home to the Pelican Rapids Vikings 4-1. The Vikings were led by Senior Sebastian Centeno-Torres, who had a three-point night, scoring two goals and had one assist. The Vikings outshot Detroit Lakes 14-3 and picked up their second win of the season.
Centeno-Torres scored the game’s first goal at the 9-minute mark as he beat Detroit Lakes goalkeeper Evan Thomas on a hard shot from close range. The Vikings added another goal 11 minutes later when Senior Oscar Pedroza scored thanks to an assist from Centeno-Torres. The Lakers scored their first goal of the game at the 31-minute mark of the first half when Ethan Gjerde scored on a rebound given up by keeper Arturo Zavala of Pelican Rapids. Seven minutes later, the Vikings made the score 3-1 when Centeno-Torres scored at the 38-minute mark. The Vikings scored in the final minute of the second half on a controversial penalty kick that went against Detroit Lakes. Senior Mohamed Ahmed added the game’s final goal when he beat Luther Van Offelen on the penalty kick. Van Offelen had to replace keeper Evan Thomas as he was given a red card on a collision with Ahmed. The Laker bench disputed the call, but the call and the goal stood, making the final 4-1.
Detroit Lakes falls to 1-4 on the season and will return to action next Tuesday when they host the Bemidji Lumberjacks. Pelican Rapids improved their record to 2-2 and will return home on Saturday for a game against Minnewaska Area.

Girls Soccer: 

The Detroit Lakes girls soccer team beat the visiting Crookston Pirates 1-0 at Rotary Soccer Park. The win extends the Lakers winning streak to 4 games. Senior Kate Stearns had the lone goal around 17min into the game. Detroit Lakes is now 4-1 on the season and will travel to Fergus Falls next Tuesday to take on Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

Volleyball:

The Laker volleyball team fell on the road on Thursday night 3-2 to the Staples-Motley Cardinals. The Lakers are now 2-2 on the season and will look to move above .500 when they return to action Tuesday when they host the Hawley Nuggets.

Girls Cross Country:

Detroit Lakes junior Julia Steffl finished in sixth place at the Detroit Lakes Cross Country Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course on Thursday evening, leading the Lakers to a seventh-place finish overall.

The Laker’s next meet will be the Lucky Lindy in Little Falls on Thursday, September 16th. There are currently 23-teams scheduled to attend, including Section 8AA opponents Alexandria, Rocori, Little Falls, and Pequot Lakes.

The Detroit Lakes boys cross country team finished in ninth place at the annual Detroit Lakes Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course on Thursday evening.
