DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – More police departments are establishing what they call “Safe Exchange Zones” for people who sell or buy items online.
In Detroit Lakes, the Police Department has made available a “Safe Exchange Zone” in the north-east parking lot of the new Police Department at 807 Summit Avenue. Detroit Lakes Police Chief, Steve Todd says the area is marked with yellow parking lines, “It’s something people can use if they’re buying a product from an online sale or exchanging custody of kids.”
The area is under video surveillance 24 hours per day and local police say the area is meant to give people who buy or sell items on sites like Craigslist or Facebook an extra layer of protection against fraud or robbery. Authorities also recommend bringing a friend or family member along as another safety precaution.
