Extreme Heat, Severe Storms on Tap This Week

(KNSI) – The hottest temperatures of the summer could be headed toward central Minnesota this week.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch effective from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Forecasters say temperatures in the mid ’90s will blanket the area creating “dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 possible Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.”

The extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. People who work or do strenuous physical activity outside are encouraged to take frequent breaks in air conditioning, if possible; seek shade often and drink plenty of fluids. People are also asked to check up on elderly relatives or neighbors, especially those who may not have air conditioning.

Low temperatures only in the low to mid 70’s overnight will do little in the way of relief from the heat, with the hottest temperatures expected into Wednesday afternoon.

As of Monday morning, central Minnesota is on the southern edge of a slight risk for severe weather later Monday. Places like Duluth, Walker and Fergus Falls have a better chance for severe weather Monday, but the potential exists each evening through Wednesday night. Central Minnesota could see severe thunderstorms Wednesday night as a cold front passes over the area. Strong, damaging winds seem to be the biggest threat, but forecasters say some large hail is possible as well.
