DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Becker County Museum is asking the community to help fill a time capsule celebrating Detroit Lakes’ 150th Anniversary.
In February, the City of Detroit Lakes asked the Becker County Historical Society and Museum to create a time capsule in conjunction with the 150th celebration of the city in an effort to preserve local history.
Now the museum is asking the public to donate small items or photos including current day news articles, advertisements, modern technology (air pods or an unused smartphone), and any other items that represent 2021 to be placed in the watertigh t time capsule.
“I think it would be really neat for our younger generation to write a letter to a child 50 years from now,” says Becky Mitchell Executive Director at the Becker County Musuem. “What we find really interesting at the museum is when we stumble across memoirs or letters to one-another, or diaries or scrapbooks, so I think those would be the kind of items that would be interesting to people in the future as well.”
Once filled, the museum plans to bury the time capsule on Thursday, July 29 during Detroit Lakes’ 150th Anniversary festivities at the Detroit Lakes City Park.
Mitchel isn’t sure when the capsule might be reopened, but says she wouldn’t be surprised if it happened in 50 years when the city celebrates their 200th anniversary.
