DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Laker baseball team saw their season conclude on Thursday evening as they fell 5-1 to the top-seeded Sartell Sabres in a Section 8AAA playoff game at St. Cloud Orthopedics Field in Sartell. It was a must-win game for the Lakers after losing on Tuesday to ROCORI 9-4.

The Lakers scored the first run in the 3rd inning, with Detroit Lakes’ Senior Jake Bishop scoring from third base on a groundout from Senior Blaine Henderson. The Lakers held onto a 1-0 lead until the Sabres tied the game in the 4th inning, with Steven Brinkerhoff scoring for Sartell after reaching on a single and then coming in to score later after an error and a fielders choice play.

The Laker offense could not retake the lead from that point forward as the Sabres were led defensively by their starting pitcher Sophomore Tyler Phelps-Hemmesch. He displayed great control on the mound and relied on his defense behind him to get outs. Phelps-Hemmesch threw 6 2/3 innings of 1-run ball and struck out four Laker batters to earn the victory. Tyler Gentile came on in relief to get the last out on a strikeout.

Detroit Lakes pitcher Blaine Henderson went six innings picking up one strikeout and allowed nine hits. The Lakers once again struggled defensively, and the Sabres took advantage of two costly errors in the 5th inning that allowed four runs to come home. Detroit Lakes committed four errors in total through 6 innings.

The Lakers end their season with an overall record of 18-4.

Sartell improves to 19-3 and will play the number five seeded Alexandria Cardinals in the next round of the playoffs. The winner of that game on Tuesday will secure their spot in the Section 8AAA championship game.

On the other side of the bracket, Bemidji will play ROCORI after defeating Little Falls 8-2. The winner of the Bemidji and ROCORI game will play the loser of the Sartell and Alexandria game.
