DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Becker County Museum broke ground on their new facility, Thursday.

The museum has been raising funds for several years to build a new 30,000 square foot building with a cost of $6.4 million.

The groundbreaking included comments from Detroit Lakes Mayor Matt Brenk, Senator Kent Eken, Representative Paul Marquart and former U.S. Representative Collin Peterson.

“Bringing all the contributors together from private donars, the city and the state make this wonderful. Not only will this museum preserve history, but bring it to life for our children and the next generations,” said Rep. Marquart.

Additionally, a Sesquicentennial Exhibit was on display celebrating Detroit Lakes’ 150th anniversary.

The Museum is still in need of around $500,000 in donations to complete the project, the groundbreaking ceremony also served as an official kick-off for the Museum’s $500,000 public campaign.

Construction is expected to take around 11 months.
