DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A groundbreaking for the new South Shore Park in Detroit Lakes occurred on Wednesday, May 19, though the park still lacks the necessary funding to be completed.
The City of Detroit Lakes plans to add new amenities in the 5.5 acre park including a playground and multi-use courts for tennis, pickleball, and basketball. A picnic shelter, parking lot and walking path have already been completed.
Wednesday’s event included an official groundbreaking with local officials, an open house style tour of the site and photos of the new amenities that will be located at the park as well as on-site food from the Ice Cream Truck and Woodfire Pizza.
South Shore Park is slated to be completed by the end of the summer at a cost of $925,000. The funding has come from grants, city funds and the park dedication fund. More than $92,000 has been raised of a fundraising goal of $210,000. Organizers hope to raise the remaining funds in the next several months from local businesses, organizations, and residents.
A sale benefiting the Park fundraising project will occur Friday, May 21 5-8pm and Sat 8-Noon. 1006 Timber Drive, DL. One block north of South Shore Dr on 280th Ave. All proceeds will be donated to the park project.
