23rd Annual Festival of Birds Underway in Lakes Area

May 20, 2021 | 9:40 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The 23rd annual Festival of Birds begins today (May 20-23) in Detroit Lakes and throughout the Lakes Area.

The annual celebration celebrates the annual migration of birds through the area. Detroit Lakes makes a great location for watching the migration because it’s located in a transition zone of tallgrass prairie, hardwood and conifer forests and a landscape peppered with wetlands and lakes.

“This is always timed every spring with the spring migration and we’re so lucky to live in this area, we’ve got over 200 species of birds that come through the area and as migration hits, this is the peak time,” Carrie Johnston with the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce said.

This year’s event features virtual presentations by Randy Kolka, Project Leader and Research Soil Scientist at the SPRUCE Climate Change Experiment, Naturalist Mike Havlik and others as well as guided fieldtrips.

Registration for the event is $25 and can be made at VisitDetroitLakes.com
