Apr 26, 2021 | 11:19 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Becker County will soon house federal prisoners in the Becker County Jail.

The agreement with the U.S. Marchasls Service will allow 10 to 20 federal prisoners to be housed at the jail. The County will earn $72 per day for each prisoner in the Jail.

“The [county] inmate population is down a little right now due to COVID, but the federal inmate population has gone up; Sheriff Glander has decided its a good method to temporarily allow federal inmates to be housed in the jail. The county will be reimbursed, which is good, because if we’re not filling the space, then the county is paying for it,” said Mike Brethorst Becker County Adminsitrator.

Federal inmates are generally not any more dangerous than regular county inmates according to Sheriff Glander.

The new Becker County Jail on Highway 59 North was built in 2019 with a total cost of $21 million.
