Derek Chauvin Pleads Fifth Amendment

Apr 15, 2021 | 9:58 AM

(KNSI) – Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin will not testify in his own defense.

At a hearing Thursday morning, Chauvin told Hennepin County judge Peter Cahill, “I will invoke my Fifth Amendment privilege,” which under the Minnesota and U.S. Constitution, defendants are allowed not to make any statements that could be self-incriminating.

Cahill also said closing arguments in the case could come as soon as Monday.

Chauvin is charged with second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in connection to George Floyd’s death in police custody last year.
