Meanwhile, the Twins Cities received only a dusting of snow overnight, but were pelted with golf ball-sized hail in the south and east metro areas. Hail in Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, and South St. Paul were as large as 1.75 inches in diameter. Funnel clouds were also reported in Waseca and Faribault, though it is unknown if any of the tornados actually touched down.
The snow and wet conditions combined with temperatures dropping below freezing overnight created hazardous travel conditions, with the State Patrol reporting dozens of crashes and spinouts. Sgt. Jesse Grabow tweeted that the areas busiest for troopers were I-94 east of Barnesville and Highway 10 from Glyndon to Hawley.
