Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM)- The DL Jaycees Water Carnival will be back in 2021. The 85th Northwest Water Carnival will be held in Detroit Lakes July 9-18.

Co-admiral Mandie Tretbar was at the Detroit Lakes City Council meeting on Tuesday evening to give the council an update on the planning of the carnival.

“Last year was only the second time in the last 86 years that we weren’t able to have a Water Carnival, and we’re moving forward with the return of the event this year,” said Tretbar. “This is pending the Governor’s orders, but we are planning on having a Water Carnival no matter what. We may have to adjust a couple of activities depending on what things look like in July.”

Highlights of the 85th Northwest Water Carnival include Kegs and Eggs at the Pavillion on Friday, July 9th as well as Xtreme Tippy Cup, the Water Fights, the Demolition Derby at the Becker County Fairgrounds, the Parade of the Northwest, the Classic Car Show, and, of course, Bash on the Beach.

“We are having the same acts come this year that weren’t able to come last year: Slamabama and Terri Clark on Friday night (July 16), then Troubadour and Clay Walker on Saturday (July 17),” said Tretbar.

The Detroit Lakes Jaycees have been sponsoring the annual Northwest Water Carnival since they organized as a chapter in 1935. The Water Carnival is one of the longest-running festivals in the state of Minnesota. It has become one of the premier summer events in the lakes area and includes a wide range of activities for the whole family.
