The Laker boys hockey team fell to the Northern Lakes Lightning 5-2 at the Kent Freeman Arena on Tuesday night. Detroit Lakes failed to bounce back after falling behind 2-0 in the 1st period, despite cutting the deficit to 2 goals in the 3rd period. The Lightning put the game out of reach after a controversial penalty against the Lakers. That resulted in the Laker head coach Ben Noah being ejected from the contest.
The Lightning, who entered the game ranked #11 in the “Let’s Play Hockey” rankings continue their hot streak as they have won 8 games in a row and move their record to 9-1 on the year. With the win, the Lightning has all but officially locked up the Mid-State Conference title.
Detroit Lakes falls to .500 on the season as their record drops to 5-5. The Lakers will have a tough test coming up on Thursday when they travel to take on one of the state’s premier teams as they travel to East Grand Forks to take on the Green Wave in a Section 8A matchup.

Nordic Skiing: The Lakers hosted teams at the Detroit Mountain on Tuesday. The event, called the Detroit Mountain Nordic Classic, saw Brainerd win the team competition for the boys and Alexandria finishing atop the girls’ standings.

Wrestling: The Lakers traveled to Hibbing on Tuesday night and came away with two wins improving their record to 18-2 on the season. The Lakers beat Hibbing 57-19 and Virginia 54-30. Next up, the Lakers will travel to Long Prairie Grey-Eagle for a triangular on Tuesday, February 23rd.
Girls Basketball: Detroit Lakes picked up a Section 8AAA win as they defeated the Alexandria Cardinals 53-40. The Lakers improved their record to 6-4 and are now 1-0 in the section. Detroit Lakes will return to the hardwood on Thursday night when they travel to Aitkin to take on the Gobblers.
Boys Swim/Dive: The Lakers fell to Moorhead on Tuesday night at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center 121 to 44. DL will host Morris on Friday at 6 pm.
Gymnastics: DL put up a score of 136.35 on Tuesday night, beating Park Rapids 136.35-120.85. The Lakers will return home on Friday night to take on a section opponent in Melrose. That meet will be held at 6 pm at the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics club in Detroit Lakes.
Boys Basketball: The Lakers had their game canceled against Bemidji on Tuesday night. DL is on a quarantine pause right now and will not be back practicing or playing until February 23rd.
