STAPLES (KDLM) – The Laker boys basketball team traveled to Staples on Thursday and won 68-48 over the Staples-Motley Cardinals. The Lakers took the lead with 8:40 remaining in the 1st half and never looked back as they improved their Mid-State Conference record to 4-1 and moved their overall record to 6-2. Despite getting into foul trouble in the 2nd half, Junior Nate Cihak led the way in scoring for Detroit Lakes with 17 points. Staples-Motley was led by Senior Adam Oberlander, who chipped in for 22 points and was automatic from beyond the arc, finishing the night with four 3-pointers.
The loss drops Staples-Motley to 1-9 on the season. The Lakers have won six of their last seven games and will have their biggest game of the season next Tuesday when they travel to take on their first Section 8AAA opponent of the season, the Bemidji Lumberjacks. The Lakers only have 2 section games on their schedule this season. Tip-off on Tuesday will be at 7:30 pm.

Wrestling: The Lakers hosted Park Rapids and Barnesville on Thursday night and picked up wins in both matchups. DL beat Barnesville 69-6 and Park Rapids 66-16. The Lakers are currently ranked #11 in the state and improve their dual record to 16-2 on the season. The Lakers will return to action on February 16th when they travel to Hibbing for a triangular.
Gymnastics: The Lakers traveled to Perham on Thursday night and put up a score of 134.45 against Perham’s 139.5. The Lakers will next be at Park Rapids on Tuesday, February 16th.
